In the spirit of inclusion and collaboration, our next Story Circle will consider two very recent creative expressions. From our engagement last month, requests emerged for our collective to experience and discuss Summer of Soul, a feature documentary about the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. This acclaimed film was just released this month and can be viewed on Hulu. The film is crafted from restored footage of the actual event and includes icons of gospel, R&B, blues and jazz, and chronicles Black culture at a pivotal time in our history.
The second resource is an anthology of essays centered around Brene Brown’s and Tanana Burke’s work on vulnerability and shame. This recently released book entitled “You Are Your Best Thing” is a curated collection of essays about the Black experience with vulnerability and shame resilience. This book is available on audio and It is suggested that you listen to the introduction and one or two of the essays. You can also go to Berne’s podcast series(Spotify) Unlocking Us and listen to the 45 min session on April 28, 2021 featuring Tarana Burke and Jadon Reynolds.
So in anticipation of our next Story Circle session, take an hour or more to watch Summer of Soul, and/or listen to the Tarana and Brene podcast and come prepared to share your story of how these resonate with you.
Finally, belonging goes beyond diversity and inclusion. While DIVERSITY is related to metrics and INCLUSION is related to behaviors, BELONGING is about feelings.
These meetings are open and free to local members of the ICF Gulf Coast Chapter.
Your co-hosts will be ICF Gulf Coast members Raymond Osbun and Alice Walker
