THE CULTURAL COMPETENCY WORKSHOP

1.5 Core, .5 RD

It is undeniable that technology and travel has helped to make the world a smaller place, and many of us engage fellow coaches and coaching clients whose cultural norms differ from our own.  What is culture?  How would you know if you’ve dishonored or crossed a cultural line?  How does it feel when it happens to you?  The answers are unique as we all are.  Working with individuals from different countries and cultures is common in a global organization.  However, even within a country, culture does vary.  Cultural competency encompasses increasing cultural knowledge, awareness, and sensitivity.  Increasing this skillset is not only enhances personal development, it’s good for the bottom line.

After completing this workshop, you will have the ability to:

1.      Recognize the differences among cultural knowledge, awareness and sensitivity
2.      Display personal cultural proficiency during coaching
3.      Distinguish the six stages of cultural competency
4.      Define intercultural communication and describe its importance in coaching

Individuals who attend the workshop will receive 2 Continuing Coach Education (CCE) units in Resource Development.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

ICF is committed to creating a more just and equitable world for coaches and coaching clients.  Through this effort, we are providing diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and justice (DEIBJ) resources to ICF Chapters.

Diversity, as defined by the Society for Human Resources Management, is “the collective mixture of differences and similarities.”

Equity – Providing resources to ensure everyone has access to the same resources and opportunities.

Inclusion – an environment where acts are intentional and deliberate to embrace diversity.

Belonging – a feeling of being valued and being oneself without judgment.

Justice – Dismantling barriers to resources and opportunities in society so that all individuals and communities can live a full and dignified life.

The topic of DEIBJ is vast, complicated and far reaching across the globe, and ICF prioritizes efforts that enhance the toolkits of member coaches, so we contribute to a thriving society.  DEIBJ workshops allow us to share knowledge, expand the conversation, and foster favorable impact on the communities we serve.  These workshops will be offered at least twice annually.    We invite our members to join us in these important efforts.  Our August session will be hosted by Vice-President Angelica Alexander Defillo who serves as the chapter’s Vice President and Chapter Diversity Champion.
